Link building and the various ways to gain links will be hotly debated for as long as this method is relevant – there’s a whole host of advice and recommendations out there. However, when we turn our attention to internal linking, there isn’t as much advice to guide us in the right direction. Obviously external linking is important as this can really help you in your cause to reach the top spot, but internal linking also has a place in the overall SEO picture. Internal linking is not a complicated procedure, so with a little guidance, hopefully you will feel assured that you’re heading in the right direction.

There are plenty of people who will happily tell you that every page should be stuffed with internal links. After all, these link provide valuable context for the target page (assuming you use targeted anchor text) and help distribute link value throughout the site, right? Well, they do, of that there can be very little doubt.
However, as with all things online, moderation is vital. If you’ve got 250 words of on-page content and 25 internal links, your design, usability and link strength is likely to be impacted hugely. Your content and links are vital to everything in SEO. Without either your site would be uncompetitive in search engines and your traffic will suffer. However, by including content that is spammy and/or unreadable you aren’t going to be doing your site any favours. Equally, getting carried away with your internal linking strategy could negate the many benefits of a considered approach.

The phrase ‘content is king’ often gets bandied around in SEO circles. Not without good reason either. It is pivotal in ensuring that search engines understand what you’re all about, it is a unique identifier and is a link enabler.
However, not all that far away from content is its close neighbour context.
Whilst content provides the bulk, context delivers the value. It is what will get search engines to take your site seriously and help deliver the rankings you deserve for the terms you are going after.
