Why Your Company Needs to Have a Google Places Profile

There’s a lot be said for having a strong local search presence. In fact I’ve said a fair amount myself. But now, arguably more than ever, it is absolutely vital for any business with a physical location to have a Google Places profile.

As was announced yesterday, Google has introduced a series of shortcuts to its home page on all smartphones. Therefore if you are looking for a coffee store, a bar or a restaurant (these are currently the 3 default options) then you can simply click the icon and it will show you all local businesses providing said service. Therefore it doesn’t take a genius to realise that if you are a hotel, pub, bistro or bar, it is now essential to have a places profile.

It might sound painfully simple, but signing up for Google Maps (as well as the Bing and Yahoo equivalents) can be hugely beneficial for your site. Not only will you gain a valuable link back to your site, but you can also ensure that you appear at the top of the SERPs for related searches in your surrounding area.

Local search is a very large part of SEO, particularly now with the mobilisation of the Internet. People aren’t just searching for products and services from sites all over the world these days, they want something local, they want a site that they can visit in person. Google Maps will play a huge part in ensuring that you are able to meet these requirements.
