3 November, 2011 4:20 pm | Posted by Ben Norman

Building your website can be a time consuming process. There are a number of things to consider initially, including site design, layout, how many pages you will feature and the content you wish to visually display. Alongside building the website you should also be thinking very carefully about search engine optimisation techniques, as these will help to rank your website pages higher up in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs). The site design and implementation of SEO strategies should come hand in hand, although if you have not yet considered this area you can begin by using a few of the following techniques in order to improve your website’s visibility. Ideally you want to create a search engine friendly website and by using some of these methods below you will be well on your way to achieving this.

Using your Blog to Generate Website Traffic

2 November, 2011 4:27 pm | Posted by Ben Norman

Building your website can take time and implementing SEO techniques to drive your site further up in the search engine rankings can also require careful consideration before the correct methods are in place and results start to show. By now you are probably already in the process of using some of the more common methods to drive traffic to your site, such as writing keyword content for your pages, writing press releases, creating podcasts and making videos on other media platforms such as YouTube to link back to your site. However, another common and useful resource you can use at your disposal is a blog. Blogs are great for sharing industry news, opinions, knowledge and explaining issues in more depth. This article will explain some of the ways you can link from your blog to generate a greater amount of traffic to your website.

When SEO Becomes Social (and Vice Versa)

31 January, 2011 5:15 pm | Posted by Ben Norman

I’ve received another interesting email enquiring about the value of social networking plug-ins for site content. The truth is, in pure SEO terms, that the benefits are negligible.

A few ‘likes’ on Facebook and a retweet or two aren’t going to propel you up the search rankings unfortunately. Social networking sites pass on little or no inherent link value, not simply because they are nofollowed, but also because most also block search spiders. So why would I feature a ShareThis button on this blog?

Well, not everything in SEO is about going after the obvious gain. If I approach Site A to get a link and they oblige, then that is going to provide a decent boost – particularly if Site A is related to my industry and has a strong link profile itself. Unfortunately, it’s not always that simple.

Be Positive with Link Building Efforts

23 March, 2010 1:56 pm | Posted by Ben Norman

The idea of building links is to attract visitors as well as improving your search engine credibility. Therefore it is counterproductive (or at least partially so) to leave links in places that do little to attract the attention of potential visitors.

Here, let me give you an example. It is good SEO practice to comment on blogs and other forums that allow you to leave links. Invariably many will be no-followed, but still, a link is a link – no matter how much it may have been weakened.

Some people try to exploit this. They will find blogs of little or no relevance to their site or the online space that they’re trying to promote and leave a nonsensical message. Even the token ‘Thanks for the information, great article’ response is better than some. Whether English isn’t their first language or they are just otherwise ignorant to the ideas of effective SEO, random gobbledegook isn’t going to inspire traffic.

How To Maximise the Effectiveness of Your Blog

4 February, 2010 2:47 pm | Posted by Ben Norman

As we’ve previously established, a blog is a great way of attracting attention for yourself, your business and your website. It is a fantastic marketing vehicle, providing useful and engaging information to the wider public, whilst also providing a great opportunity to build strength for your site and attract traffic.

If you have a business website and have not yet implemented a blog, you are missing out on a major trick. Take this blog as an example, it is here to provide visitors to my site with some helpful tips, a bit of an insight into how SEO works and hopefully encourage them to explore the rest of the site. There’s nothing underhanded about it, almost every blog in the world is written to generate traffic and to get people looking elsewhere – whether that’s products, services, other blogs or even paid adverts – just as long as you do actually provide something.

How a Blog Can Improve your Search Engine Ranking

18 August, 2009 2:52 pm | Posted by Ben Norman

You’ll no doubt have noticed that there are a lot of business sites sporting blogs; in fact some have nothing but. If you haven’t already integrated one into your website, you may be left wondering what all the fuss is about.

Well, first and foremost, a blog is an opportunity for you to show off your industry expertise. If your company is at the forefront of new innovations, or is in a sector that is undergoing major changes, you want to be able to show visitors and clients exactly what is going on. If people don’t come to you for news, they’ll go elsewhere it’s as simple as that.
