Using a Blog to Bolster Your SEO
It might seem like a bit of a round about way of doings things, but a blog can be hugely effective in helping to optimise a website. Whilst you may not initially realise it, a blog can provide a whole host of benefits beyond the most obvious passing on of information.
A lot of SEO work is based on how often a website can be indexed. If you have a small website with relatively few links and rarely update its content then you are highly unlikely to achieve the same level of attention as a site that is larger and is frequently updated. The reason for this is simple, search engine crawlers require new information to process in order to index your site. With indexing essential for you to improve your rankings, it doesn’t take a genius to work out that the more you are indexed by the search engines, the better your chances are of achieving a higher ranking.
Of course there are a wide number of ways for you to get fresh content onto your site; however, few are as frequent and unobtrusive as a blog. You can tweak your page copy to include new terms, but you don’t want to do this too regularly otherwise you could end up with some Frankenstein copy with bits and pieces from all over the place. You could add new pages to your site; this is of course an excellent idea, particularly when including new categories or guides to help improve the visitors’ experience. But once again there is a note of caution with this; whilst large sites are not without their merit, you don’t want to expand so far that it becomes confusing for human visitors to navigate.
So what we’ve learnt is that new content isn’t necessarily difficult to include, but it has to be done in such a way that it doesn’t detract from your current site content. Once again, this is another good reason for adding a blog.
With fresh content bolstering your SEO efforts and encouraging the search engine crawlers to visit with a greater frequency, it certainly shouldn’t be far off the top of your list of priorities for optimising a website.
But a blog isn’t just about SEO of course, it is also an invaluable opportunity for you to show your industry prowess and provide your visitors with information that they will be able to use, discuss or comment on. Whilst you don’t want to gloat, you can certainly show that you are a company that deserves attention and is certainly worthy of using. It provides a regular communication with a wider community and offers you the chance to communicate your knowledge, experience and opinions in a public space.
But returning to matters SEO, a blog is also a great way to expand your website without over-complicating it. As your posts will often be archived, they remain attached to your site as an additional indexable web page, but won’t interfere with visitors navigating around the site. You can also provide vital links to other pages within the site itself, as well as to other related posts of course, to help circulate links within your site and make it easier for search engines and visitors to navigate around.
Finally, another positive aspect of having a blog attached to your site is the potential for link bait. Every post you write is viewable to the wider public; if someone should find it interesting or challenging they may well want to reference it in their own blog or site. If they do this and provide a link back, that’s one more new link for your profile, thus helping you to further bolster your SEO efforts

Totally agree that using a blog can help a website SEO efforts. Though there are many Content Management Systems in the market where adding in new content is easy, I still think (especially for most corporates) websites shouldn’t be portal like if you are not in the portal business.
For my clients, I still like to build standard html pages to get their key messages out and add in a blog to attract the targeted keywords for SEO purpose.
