How to Encourage Link Baiting
The power of the link is unsurpassed in the realms of SEO. It is often the strength of your linking profile that will ultimately define how your website is perceived by search engines, helping to influence their ranking process.
There are only so many avenues you can explore when asking for, buying or signing up for links. After a while, and it will be quite a while, you will find that you have exhausted the quality websites. This is where link baiting comes into its own.
Producing something that acts as link bait is probably one of the best ways of improving your profile. It allows a number of sites, often from varying industries and backgrounds, to pass on some strength to your site. But what exactly is link bait?
Well, as the name suggests, it relates to content that lures in links. Usually this is achieved by creating something hugely original, controversial or that will appeal to a wide range of people – or any combination of these. This can be released by way of a blog post, article, new piece of free software or even just a piece of art. Anything can become a viral hit, anything can encourage people to want to share it with their own visitors.
But you can’t really encourage people to link to you. Any successful link baiting campaign will be largely natural, and should remain so. The best way of getting website owners to give you a nod is to create something different, something that has quality and something that people will enjoy sharing. That is the ideal link bait.
Of course it isn’t an exact science, many people have tried and failed miserably to get their content noticed in this way; that’s just the nature of the Internet. But it is for this reason that your prime focus whenever you are creating content should always remain quality. It is quality that people are looking for and it is quality that people will link to.
You can’t force the issue, but you can go out and leave comments on other blogs and get involved with industry forums. That will encourage more people to come to your site, and the more people that end up visiting your site the more likely they are to find the urge to link to it. Soon one link can become two, and two can become four; you just need to get the ball rolling.
A really successful link baiting campaign is hard to come by, in fact most sites will never achieve it. But you can have small incremental gains, which can eventually expand into the huge successes you’re looking for. So, link baiting is perfect SEO, but elusive with it.
