5 Quick SEO Tips for Beginners

It’s not always easy getting started promoting a website. Whatever your expertise in the field of Search Engine Optimisation, we all need a push in the right direction sometimes. Here are five quick tips for getting your website optimised in no time at all.

Produce Content for All Pages

You should already have your architecture in place. So when your pages are complete it is vital that they contain text. Depending on how many resources you have available, this content can be as long or as short as you require.

What is essential though is that there is some meat for search engines to latch on to. They need to be guided by your words to understand the context of a page. The content should be aimed towards your audience too, so don’t forget the human audience when it comes to producing content. The better optimised it is, the longer (within reason) the content and more emotive the text can be, the greater your chances of earning rankings and gaining conversions.

Ensure Internal Links Are Working

Pages should be logically set out, ideally with a Sitemap available to help all visitors locate your content. If your visitors can’t get to areas of your site, neither can the search engines. Make sure your links are working and present them in a way that can be easily understood. Failing to do this will undermine your SEO work.

Create a Strong Page Footer

Your footer will sit at the bottom of each page. Usually this is an opportunity to link to your Terms and Conditions and other legal pages. However, there is plenty more that you can include, such as:

Sitemap link, helping it to be visible on all pages
Contact details
Keyword optimised page links

The contact details, including address and phone number will ensure that your visitors can get in contact quickly from any page. It will also boost your local search strength, giving Google a clear indication where in the world you are based.

Meta Descriptions

Whilst the strength of Meta is often debated, there is no reason why you shouldn’t have unique Meta for each page. Not only does it help you to develop your website’s SEO, using keywords and phrases to give context to a page, it provides a useful selling tool.

The Meta description will appear on Google search engine results pages, therefore you can produce a tailored message to reach out and earn the click. If you can get your Meta to stand out and help you improve your ranking, the website will benefit as a whole.

Gain Obvious Links

Easy to say, not so easy to do? Well, not really actually. It can take time to build up a really strong unique link profile; however, to get started you just need to get your feet under the table. So here are a few that you might consider:

Google Maps
Yell.com
Dmoz

These are particularly useful for developing your linking profile, raising your visibility and gaining a local presence; all of which will help your site to succeed. Where possible, include as much information in your profile and optimise as appropriate.

Obviously you can go further than these first few; there are literally thousands of directories out there and you can also contact clients or associates to link back to your site to help build a little strength.

So there are five quick tips for starting your SEO work. As with most things though, the more you are able to do, the better optimised your site will be.
