If you’ve been following my blog posts regularly you’ll notice that I spend a lot of time emphasising the importance of working on your social channels to improve SEO.
There’s a very good reason behind this. Social networks are incredibly powerful tools, through which you can gain quality links, build strong relationships and communicate directly with consumers. Social media gives brands a platform from which they can be heard.
In an incredibly competitive and crowded market where first page domination is held in such high regard, tools like social media are invaluable.
One of the most popular social networks available is Twitter.
If you haven’t heard of Twitter or don’t yet understand what it is, then perhaps SEO is not the right business for you to be in. It essentially allows you to communicate to the world in 140 characters. You can attach trending topics to your tweets to give them relevance and contact people directly by including their twitter handle.
Sounds simple right? That’s because it is. But it’s this simplicity which helped the social platform become so insanely popular since its initial release in 2006. It’s popularity seems to show no signs of slowing down either, as last December it was reported that the service was receiving half a billion tweets a day.

Establish your brand name properly and be smart when choosing your user name or ‘twitter handle’ as it’s known as online. It’s always best to secure your full and proper brand name, but get in there quick though.
If you expect users to find you online you need to make it clear exactly who you are. Include your logo in your picture and your full name in you bio, and ensure your profile is branded. You can contact the Twitter admin team to get your profile certified as your official brand, which will build more trust with your users and give your profile more authority.
Communication really is the name of the game here. You can use Twitter as the voice of your brand, not just updating your users with the latest news about your business but also sharing the musings and thoughts of those who represent your brand.
In this sense you can use Twitter to build a personality for your brand. This personality can aid in building better brand trust, establishing your brand as a unique entity, promoting products or new content and driving sales.
One brand that’s got their brand personality perfectly represented is @Skittles. Instead of opting to promote their product through Twitter, Skittles instead uses their account to share random thoughts related to their brand values and to send happy messages with friends.
This has helped the brand’s Twitter account go viral several times, and has earned them a wealth of free media coverage.
Follow the Leader
You can also use Twitter to increase your brand’s relevancy. Twitter presents you with the most talked about topics by showing you what’s currently trending on their feeds. If your brand is seen getting involved in the current affairs in a way that reflects your values it can be a great way to spread awareness and drive people to your site.
@Oreo showed they were perfectly in tune with what was going on when they released their now infamous ‘dunk in the dark’ advert during the Super Bowl blackout at the beginning of this month. The quickly made ad instantly went viral and has been praised for its relevancy.
You can also use the hash tag button on Twitter to start your own trending topic, such as promoting an event or competition. You could hold Twitter quizzes or conversations and then include a write up on your site.
Remember that if Twitter is the voice of your brand then your site is its body. Your tweets should be used in order to raise awareness of your brand and site, and help you to keep content on your site fresh and interesting.
