More and more people are becoming familiar with how to use videos as a way to market their product. The rise of social media sites such as YouTube have had a dramatic impact on this contribution, as registered users can upload their content onto the Internet and share their videos with other users online. Another Manic Monday for Online Retailers

28 November, 2011 3:16 pm | Posted by Ben Norman

On Friday I wrote about the problems that online retailers face at this time of year when trying to promote their businesses online. Today those issues really come to the fore with the arrival of ‘Mega Monday’, supposedly the busiest day of the year for ecommerce sites.

With the world pouring online to buy Christmas goodies, you want to make sure that your site isn’t left behind. So whilst this advice might come a little late for some, there’s no harm in learning lessons from the mistakes and triumphs of this year’s big players.

Preparing Your Online Business for a Successful Christmas

25 November, 2011 3:12 pm | Posted by Ben Norman

In a little under a month, garage forecourts and local supermarkets will be teeming with desperate people seeking last minute gifts for loved ones. Whilst Christmas may be the season of good cheer, for many this gives way to blind panic.

It’s not just consumers that are whipped up into a frenzy though, retailers can be just as gung ho. They slash prices to near loss-making levels just to clear stock and take advantage of the stampeding hordes knocking their doors down. This being Black Friday in America, it’s probably a good time to talk about preparedness and effective marketing techniques that won’t leave you out of pocket.

How Many Keywords Should I Use?

24 November, 2011 4:18 pm | Posted by Ben Norman

If you’re using content for your website or other online marketing material you have probably asked yourself, ‘how many keywords should I be using within each piece of content?’ Keywords form part of the optimisation process for your website and they are the key terms, words and phrases that you use within written text. You implement these so that when someone types in one of these terms in a search engine, your website has a greater chance of featuring in the search engine results pages (SERPs).

The SEO Benefits of Developing Your Brand Locally

23 November, 2011 1:14 pm | Posted by Ben Norman

Even if global domination is the end goal, every business has to start somewhere. Whether you are entirely online or just have a single store with a basic website, most businesses have some kind of local base. This could be anything from a small village to a conurbation of a large city; wherever you set up business, this is where you should begin your marketing efforts.

If everybody in your neighbourhood is aware of your business, then they will help spread news to others within the wider vicinity and so the process continues until you reach the marketing equivalent of terminal velocity. But you can’t leave these things to chance. Engage with the community, sponsor events, get involved with local charities and generally make sure that people are aware of your name.

A Case Study: Negative PR and Link Bait

22 November, 2011 1:53 pm | Posted by Ben Norman

Using social media and older more traditional methods of communication to promote your services, create brand awareness and share your latest news should, by now, be part of your business strategy. If you are not using these on a regular basis then you should be. In the example of social media, if this is where your potential customers are, then you need to be engaging with them on the same platform.

Alongside this, you also need to react to any negative comments or negative feedback that you might receive. ‘Why?’ you might ask. Well if people are posting negative comments on your social sites then this will have negative implications for your company. Without reacting you are leaving the situation whilst people talk negatively about your brand and at the same time you will be losing potential customers.

How to Attract the Right Traffic

21 November, 2011 4:56 pm | Posted by Ben Norman

Getting clicks through to your site shows that people are aware of its existence and were sufficiently interested to follow the link or a friend’s recommendation – no bad thing. However, a lot can be lost in unqualified statistics. After all, it’s not a lot of use to you if your site receives thousands of visits every day but only converts a tiny fraction of those into any meaningful business.

This is why you have to make sure that you’re attracting the right audience in the first instance. Making sure that potential customers come on to your site’s pages and not just inquisitive folks in research-mode. So how can you make sure you attract the right traffic?

Should You Interlink Domains?

18 November, 2011 5:52 pm | Posted by Ben Norman

It’s not uncommon for one business to have a number of different entities operating in completely different markets. There are hundreds of global corporations, each of which has dozens of subsidiaries working within the same organisation. However, even smaller businesses can have offshoots.

If each of these brands has a website, you might think that it is only natural to interlink it to others in the same group. In many ways you’d be right too. However, if you create a network of sites, each of which are passing links to and one another, this could potentially catch the eye of Google. So you do need to tread carefully.
