Why SEOs (Hypothetically) Love Bad PR

28 October, 2011 1:27 pm | Posted by Ben Norman

For a business, bad PR can cause critical damage. Maybe a national newspaper has exposed some bad practices, perhaps your CEO has been arrested for embezzlement or you’ve been found ripping off product designs from small businesses. This can attract a vitriolic hate campaign, started in the blogosphere and ending up all over social media sites.

This is a disaster in almost every regard. I say almost, because actually, in terms of SEO and link building, this could be just the ticket.

How useful is Article Marketing?

27 October, 2011 1:39 pm | Posted by Ben Norman

It’s been widely accepted that writing articles related to your industry or business is a great way of driving additional traffic to your site and building links. Whilst this may be so, many people can often overstate the power of article marketing or worse totally undermine their efforts by writing sloppy copy.

Writing articles is an affordable and effective way of driving traffic to your site, not only that but it can increase your site’s authority within search engines. This will allow your site to appear higher up in the SERPs for your desired keywords. So you can see that writing articles has a two pronged effect of driving traffic; the article itself can be used to attract custom and refer users to your site, whilst the sheer presence and referral of a link to your site will help you rise up the rankings, in theory that is.

Making the Most Out of Every Piece of Content

26 October, 2011 11:21 am | Posted by Ben Norman

When you’re involved in content marketing, you can get caught up in trying to produce as many articles and blog posts as possible but forget to do the marketing. Remember, even when you’ve finished writing and fired it off to a blog owner or article distribution site, your work is not finished yet.

Think of each bit of content that you produce as an individual page, associated with but not actually hosted on your website. Now you want that page to be optimised so that it will rank well, but you also want it to build strength so that this can be spread throughout your site. This is why you build deep links to your site and why you should do the same for your external content.

How Important is Website Design to Online Success?

24 October, 2011 5:57 pm | Posted by Ben Norman

There’s a line of thought that suggests you have to have a website that looks professional and adheres to modern design concepts. However, when browsing the Internet, you can be met with dozens of sites that completely ignore these basic ‘rules’ but yet continue to succeed. So what’s the secret of good design and just how much of an impact will it have?

One famous example of what many might technically as being an ‘ugly’ website is that of LINGs cars. It’s blotted with multicolour text, garish imagery and features that wouldn’t look out of place on a student website circa 1996. However, it works. In fact it works remarkably well indeed, as Ling revealed in a recent interview with Dan Barker.

How Many Internal Links Should You Have On Each Page?

21 October, 2011 2:00 pm | Posted by Ben Norman

There are plenty of people who will happily tell you that every page should be stuffed with internal links. After all, these link provide valuable context for the target page (assuming you use targeted anchor text) and help distribute link value throughout the site, right? Well, they do, of that there can be very little doubt.

However, as with all things online, moderation is vital. If you’ve got 250 words of on-page content and 25 internal links, your design, usability and link strength is likely to be impacted hugely. Your content and links are vital to everything in SEO. Without either your site would be uncompetitive in search engines and your traffic will suffer. However, by including content that is spammy and/or unreadable you aren’t going to be doing your site any favours. Equally, getting carried away with your internal linking strategy could negate the many benefits of a considered approach.
