What Makes SEO So Popular?

If you’ve got a website, you will have done well to avoid any mentions of Search Engine Optimisation. You may not even know the first thing about it, other than a lot of other people are doing it and either love or hate it.

Even from a position of total ignorance, the potential that it offers – decent rankings, good traffic and a solid ROI – is pretty tempting. Then you have the ‘fun’ element of SEO. That is where you try new things, watch your site strengthen and visitor levels increase. It’s not a passive process. It’s certainly not something that lacks measurable results.

Critics will claim that proponents of SEO are simply trying to lure you into some form of trap. “They only want your money and for you to fall for their devious scheme.” I am happy to be able to announce that this isn’t one huge conspiracy; all SEOs don’t work to encourage punters to pay lots of money for absolutely nothing. Why else would I write blog posts and publish them to the world for free?

Don’t Overcomplicate Your SEO

When done properly, SEO is straightforward. There’s nothing complicated about it at all, as long as you abide by the general advice given. Unfortunately, for some, there is a constant need to dress it up and add issues that could easily be avoided.

Take content for instance. You know it’s good for SEO and it’s useful for visitors too. So just write the content that fits each individual page. Yes keywords are important, but if you’re writing for a particular category, service or product, there’s a fair chance that the keywords will appear naturally. Okay, it’s good to have them at the start and finish of content; but don’t torture yourself trying to cram them into every conceivable gap.

This is just one instance where over-thinking and overcomplicating something that is fundamentally straightforward can have an adverse effect on your site and it’s SEO.
