Marketing yourself online is by no means an easy process. If you haven’t had too much experience developing successful sites, then the idea of gaining links and the importance of doing so is probably slightly lost on you. But don’t be fooled, link building is absolutely essential to your website’s future success.
Most search engine algorithms, the mathematic protocol in place to determine rankings, are built on the strength of links. Each link passes on some strength, which in turn is assigned to the page in question. Of course the pathway of a link can be long and stretch across numerous websites; however the first thing that you need to sort out is your own internal linking structure.

This is, or at least should be, the fundamental aim of any website. Whilst of course you want visitors to use your services or buy your products, first you need to attract them to your pages and ensure that they don’t leave instantaneously.
It’s often a fine balancing act and one that can take time to perfect. Of course you want to improve traffic, but spending all your time optimising pages to bring in people from around the Internet is only going to have limited results if the pages you’re leading them to are below par.

When deciding where to allocate time and funds in marketing your website it isn’t always as simple as it may first appear. There are lots of areas that can be explored, all of which have their own intrinsic qualities and can achieve fantastic results. However, time and time again search engine optimisation is the tool of choice.
Why should that be the case? Is there anything out there better for getting your website noticed? Below I’ve put together a couple of the key battles in an effort to show how SEO differs, is similar to and is better or worse than the main contenders.

Duplicate content is one of those things that SEO professionals are always warning against. Whether you’ve got multiple domains for one site or have borrowed (or have had borrowed) some site content from elsewhere, potential pitfalls are abound.
The first problem is multi-domains. This is something that Google recently addressed by saying that you wouldn’t be directly penalised by them; however, this stops short of confirming that there is no ranking penalty due to the dissipation of linking strength.

The simple answer to this is that a website’s ranking is determined by the search engine’s individual algorithm. Unfortunately that probably doesn’t quite do it the full justice.
The search engine algorithm is an extraordinarily technical piece of mathematics. It is fundamentally based around ranking sites through their many strands of links and keywords. The search engine algorithm will assign a weighting, in the case of Google this is often conveyed as PageRank, which will determine how high you feature in general.

When it comes to promoting your business online, you want to ensure that you use every conceivable means to do so. If you’ve optimised your site, invested in paid advertising and explored social media, then why not create a corporate blog?
Some might be inclined to suggest that blogs are little more than online diaries and have no place in business; well, without putting too fine a point on it, they’re wrong. A blog is an incredibly versatile and useful resource for any company. It can be used to promote your business, as a forum for debating the current issues affecting your industry or just to inform visitors about the latest news from within a company.

If you want your website to succeed you need to adorn it with hard work and expert SEO. It might be clichéd, but on the Internet – more often than not – you only get out of it what you put in. So making the effort when you’re optimising your site can pay dividends in the weeks, months and even years to come.
Your website should be treated like the investment that it is. Not only have you invested money in its creation and maintenance but you have spent hours getting it ready. The job of maintaining a website is never done, therefore resting on your laurels simply isn’t an option. It’s a continuous process and must be regularly checked to ensure that your investment is still holding up.

Link building is a process that can make or break a website. If you choose not to develop your inbound link profile, you can find that your site struggles to gain the attention of the search engines and your target audience.
The process of gaining links that point towards your site’s pages is simple, although for maximum it has to be done correctly. An easy way to get started though is through article submission. All you need to get started is a unique article and a few minutes of time.

When you’ve had no experience whatsoever in promoting a website, investing in SEO can seem like a leap into an unknown void. It can be particularly difficult if you’ve been involved with the development of the site, or own the company that it promotes. You don’t want anything to ruin your project.
While this is completely understandable, you have to be able to accept SEO advice otherwise you could be jeopardising all of the hard work you’ve put in. Unfortunately, it is an SEO professional’s job to diagnose problems and offer solutions; therefore, this is often the source of primary conflict and an area where you need to be able to let go most.

There aren’t many better things for a website’s SEO than a long list of top quality inbound links. If you’re struggling to rank where you’d like to be, then article writing and submission could well provide a very useful tool.
It’s one of the simplest search engine marketing techniques going and it doesn’t really require any expertise. All you need to be able to do is write an interesting article that will resonate with people and then unleash it online. Whilst writing may not come naturally to everybody, you’ll have the opportunity to write about the things that you’re most knowledgeable about – presumably at least – in so far as they should all be related to your industry.
